Find the Best Medicine to Cure Patients

Part 1A: Introduction

In this lab, you will be playing an online game, Statspital. In this game, there is an outbreak of a new disease. Three potential medicines are currently being tested to help the sick patients: the Yellow Medicine, the Blue Medicine and the Combined Medicine. All of them have shown some evidence of success; however, none is 100% effective, and more testing is needed to determine which treatment is best. Your goal is to cure as many patients as possible within a short time frame.

Part 1B: Playing Statspital

In Statspital, you need to control the doctor's movements, pick up medicines, and give them to the patients.

Controls:

Use Arrow Keys or WASD to control the movement of the doctor.

Use Space to pick up and give medicine to the patients.

Use Enter to mix two different medicines at the mixing table.

Goal: Cure as many patients as possible within a short time frame.

Play:

Player ID The game will ask you for a Player ID. You can use any name you like, but this will be on the internet, so do not use a name that will easily identify you.

Group ID If you are playing this game for a course, your instructor will provide a Group ID so you will be able to compete with everyone in your class.

Part 1C: Exploring Sample Data

Before playing more advanced levels, let's look at some data from a previous group of Players. To begin, set Statspital App1 to Settings A (at left) and then answer the questions below.

Part 1E: Collect Your Own Data

1. Go back to the game. Use the same Player ID and Group ID to play Level 1. You can view your data by clicking Graph button. For each medicine, the "mean effectiveness" is the average for each type of medicine. When Level 1 is complete, record your results.

What was your score for Level 1?

After completing Level 1, which strategy is best?

Explain why you would choose that strategy for level 1.

2. Go back to the game. Use the same Player ID and Group ID to play Level 2. When Level 2 is complete, record your results.

Part 1F: Get Curious

1. Sometimes averages can be tricky. If we only look at averages and not at graphs that show all the data, we may miss some important information. How does looking at your graph help you make a better winning strategy than simply looking at the average effectiveness?

2. After comparing answers with your classmates, try playing level 2 and level 3 again. See if you can get the High Score.
